Baby Cottage Pie

Red meat is one of the best sources of iron for babies and toddlers. You can replace the minced beef with minced lamb to turn this into a Shepherd’s pie too!

  • 100 g lean minced beef
  • 25 g carrot peeled and diced
  • 25 g red onion diced
  • 25 g red pepper diced
  • 1 tsp tomato puree
  • 75 ml baby stock
  • 5 g butter
  • 10 ml milk
  • 100 g potatoes peeled


  • Boil or steam the potatoes and carrots together in a pan for around 15 minutes, drain and add the butter and milk and mash well to form a limp free pie topping then set aside.
  • Add the minced beef, red onion, red pepper, tomato puree and baby stock to a saucepan and cook covered for 20 minutes, stirring every so often.
  • Blend with a stick blender for around 30 seconds to give it a smooth texture, or longer if you wish.
  • Divide the beef mixture into 2 ramekins and top with the carrot and potato mash.
  • Heat under the grill for 5 minutes for an optional crispy topping.
