Why children grow up having unhealthy relationships with food and how to avoid them

We’re going give you an overview of what unhealthy relationships with food actually are, how they develop and what we can do to help our children grow up to have a healthy relationship with food instead. Ultimately it’s about giving you the tools to grow a Happy Healthy Eater.

MY TODDLER HAS JUST TURNED 2. CAN I SWITCH THEM TO MY TODDLER HAS JUST TURNED 2. CAN I SWITCH THEM TO SEMI SKIMMED MILK?

The UK’s recommendation is that after your little one has turned 2 they can transition to lower-fat dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and cheese.

Not all little ones will be ready for this switch because semi-skimmed milk and lower-fat dairy foods contain less energy and less fat-soluble vitamins than their full-fat equivalents.

If their growth is slow or they have a restricted diet because of allergies or picky eating, you should NOT make this switch without a chat with their dietitian.

If they are healthy, eat well, are not fussy and have no medical concerns, then go ahead and make the switch.

Have you made the switch to lower-fat dairy products? Tell me in the comments below.

I've been on holiday for the last couple of weeks I've been on holiday for the last couple of weeks and it's given me some time to think about things.

I want to make sure that what I do in The Children's Nutritionist is exactly what you want.

And so I've pulled together a survey to get your feedback and some new ideas.

Now, I know not everyone likes filling out forms, and so to show my thanks I'm offering up the opportunity for one lucky parent to win a personal one to one consultation with me, to pick my brain and get free support and advice about food, nutrition, feeding and parenting around food.

You can of course feedback anonymously. That's absolutely fine too.

So, If you'd like to help inform what I create for you going forwards, the link to the survey is in my bio.

Thank you sooooo much!

VEGGIE SOURCES OF IRON As requested last We VEGGIE SOURCES OF IRON

As requested last Wednesday here is a graphic for you on vegetarian sources of iron.

Whether you are vegetarian or not, often toddlers go off eating meat. It's chewy, it's hard work and so it's one of the really common foods that gets refused.

And at the same time, their requirement for iron (which is found in large amounts in meat) is really quite high.

This is often why toddlers can sometimes become anaemic or have low iron levels.

So knowing which non meat foods contain iron can be quite handy:

✅ egg yolks,
✅ fortified unsweetened breakfast cereals
✅ nut butters
✅ sesame & pumpkin seeds, flax & hemp are good too.
✅ lentils
✅ beans
✅ chickpeas and hummus
✅ soya (tofu)
✅ spinach and other green leafy vegetables do contain iron (but not as much as Popeye suggests!)
✅ Dried fruits like raisins, sultanas and apricots

Pair all of these non-meat iron sources with vitamin C containing food to help the iron get to where it's needed. Vitamin C is found in fruit and vegetables.

I recommend that iron-containing foods are given twice a day.

☝️BLUEBERRY FRITTERS RECIPE👌 ☝️BLUEBERRY FRITTERS RECIPE👌

Suitable from 12 months

Ingredients:
100g fresh or frozen Blueberries
200g wholemeal flour
50g granulated sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1 large egg
80g olive margarine
1 tsp vanilla
160g whole milk natural yogurt
Rapeseed oil for frying

Method:
1. In a food mixer, beat together the margarine and sugar until lighter in colour and fluffy.
2. Add the egg, vanilla and yogurt and beat until all the ingredients are well combined.
3. Combine the flour and the baking powder and then gradually add them a tablespoon at a time to the mixer.
4. Stop the mixer as soon as the ingredients are combined to prevent over mixing and add the blueberries, fold in with a spoon.
5. Add a little oil to a frying pan and heat.
6. Add tea spoons of the mixture into the hot oil, leaving a gap between them so that they don’t join together.
7. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown then flip to cook the other side.
8. To test to see if the fritter is cooked, insert a toothpick or cocktail stick in its centre. If the mixture sticks to the toothpick, cook it a little bit longer.
9. Transfer to a piece of kitchen roll to absorb excess oil then on to a cooling rack.

7 Easy Ways To Reduce Food Waste Whether it 7 Easy Ways To Reduce Food Waste

Whether it’s the cost of living crisis or our social conscience many of us are trying to reduce food waste.

Here are my 7 easiest suggestions:

➡️Use re-closable and reusable packaging in the fridge to keep opened food fresher for longer. I love glass containers with wooden or silicone lids.

➡️Know the difference between ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ dates.

➡️Food CAN be eaten after the best before date.

➡️Check out the storage details for each food you buy and keep it in the right place.

➡️Check your fridge temperature is below 5 degrees - UK fridges are on average 2 degrees too high! Getting this right can help milk last three days longer!

➡️Meal plan ahead according to the dates of the food in your fridge. You can grab my FREE my handy family meal planner to help you stay organised. Jut drop me a DM if you want one.

➡️Know what an appropriate portion size is for your children and yourselves. We nearly all overestimate how much food children can eat. This will ensure you only buy enough and not too much.

➡️Not sure of portion sizes for little ones? I have them for sale in my shop.

➡️Be inventive with recipes using leftovers - did you know you can make soup from potato peelings!!?

Ever wondered why children refuse foods as soon as Ever wondered why children refuse foods as soon as the company changes the packaging?

It's because the child is visually identifying the food by its package and not by the actual food.

They are often times not even processing the visual aspects of the actual food.

They see the packet, identify what it is, and then go to “autopilot” knowing what it is evern without actually seeing what's inside the box.

But, we need our children to be able to process the actual food visually while they are eating it, so that when the packaging changes - and this happens more often than you think, children will still accept the food.

Also helpful while we are living in this cost of living crisis and you might want to try and buy a cheaper brand.

What can you do? Decant the food before serving it
